NaPoWriMo 2022-Soul Sonnet

Today’s challenge is to write a curtal sonnet. This is a variation on the classic 14-line sonnet. The curtal sonnet form was developed by Gerard Manley Hopkins, and he used it for what is probably his most famous poem, “Pied Beauty.” A curtal sonnet has eleven lines, instead of the usual fourteen, and the last line is shorter than the ten that precede it.

Your soul remembers how beautiful the world used to be,
When you could see the constellations in night sky,
Before you were blinded by neon lights,
All now you see is a grey dusty haze hanging low,
A smoggy blanket over lush tall pines,
Claustrophobic throttle sucking out the zestful life,
You feel that you have forgotten to breathe free,
Your heart skips a beat in tandem,
Telling you its time to walk into the unknown wild,
Seeking refuge under those dark mystic shadows,
And embrace peace!
